A Powerful Story From the Past: Our Work With the Arkivet Peace & Human Rights Centre
A Powerful Story From the Past: Our Work With the Arkivet Peace & Human Rights Centre

By Josef Yohannes

This summer, the Arkivet Museum contacted me and asked if I wanted to take part in an exhibition for children about childhood memories of war, hosted at the Arkivet Peace and Human Rights Center in Kristiansand. Steve and I said yes, and our task was to write and illustrate the stories of people who experienced war as children.

We were given the story of Randi, whose parents were part of the resistance movement during World War II. Both were imprisoned, and at just 12 years old, Randi had to care for her three younger siblings — an enormous burden for any child. Randi is still alive today and is now 94 years old.

A huge thank-you to Ingeborg at Arkivet for giving us the opportunity to be part of such an important project, and to Randi for allowing us to share her moving and inspiring story.

If you live in Kristiansand, or are visiting the city, I highly recommend stopping by the exhibition at Arkivet.
